This is the least controversial path, unlike the outright naturalization of foreign players that Indonesia or the Philippines are pursuing. VFF chooses the safe route: exploiting the overseas Vietnamese community. However, the gap between rhetoric and execution is clear. In the three recent call-ups of naturalized players, only one or two started. This number reveals that naturalized players remain a backup option, not core starters. Head coach Kim Sang Sik holds full authority over squad selection, and VFF skillfully shifts responsibility to him: 'How players are used is the head coach's decision.' This both empowers and shields the federation if results disappoint. Looking at the regional context, the naturalization race is heating up. Indonesia has naturalized numerous Dutch players, the Philippines has a dense diaspora force. Thailand is not staying out either. Vietnam is behind, but with a cautious strategy: not opening the floodgates, but targeting positions of need. Adou Minh can play center-back or full-back — a position where Vietnamese football is scarce of high-quality talent.
